Botanical Credentials – Tabernanthe iboga
Tabernanthe iboga is a slow-growing perennial shrub of the family Apocynaceae, endemic to the dense equatorial rainforests of Central West Africa – principally Gabon, Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The plant reaches 1-3 metres in height and is distinguished by its elliptical dark-green leaves, pale tubular flowers and small orange drupes. The pharmacologically active compounds are concentrated in the root bark, where the indole alkaloid ibogaine and its metabolite noribogaine predominate alongside tabernanthine, ibogamine and approximately a dozen minor alkaloids.
The ibogaine alkaloid complex has been the subject of substantial European and North American clinical research, with multiple Phase II trials currently underway examining its efficacy in opioid use disorder, alcohol dependence and treatment-resistant depression. Our root bark has served as reference material in several academic phytochemistry studies.
Iboga in Cultural and Scientific Context
For centuries, Tabernanthe iboga has occupied a central position in the Bwiti spiritual tradition of Gabon and Cameroon. Used in initiation ceremonies, healing rituals and rites of passage, the plant is regarded as a gateway to ancestral knowledge and a facilitator of profound psychological integration. This cultural heritage informs our approach to sourcing: we work exclusively with communities where Iboga cultivation and harvest remain embedded in traditional stewardship practices.
In European integrative medicine circles, interest in Iboga continues to grow. Researchers, therapists and harm-reduction practitioners across the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany and the United Kingdom are increasingly seeking analytically verified botanical material that meets the documentation standards required by institutional review boards and harm-reduction protocols.
